Artist Recommendation: Zitten

Zitten (짙은) is quite different from the typical Korean male act. Whereas boy bands, styled from top to toe storm the charts, the singer-songwriter duo Zitten are slowly making a name for themselves in the indie scene, with gentle, ethereal but very touching songs.

They formed in 2005 by vocalist/guitarist Seong Young-Ook and drummer Yoon Hyeong-Ro, who knew each other from college. They released their first EP in the same year. Later, one of their songs was used in a movie, which helped the young band to gain more recognition. Then, Ro went to fulfill his military duties and Young-Ook submitted a demo to Pastel Music, a renowned Korean indie label. Obviously, the label was impressed with his music and so the album Vol. 1 – Zitten was released in October 2008.

Unfortunately, information on Zitten is very hard to find. So we suggest you to simply listen to their music, samples can be found on the official site, as well as their MySpace profile.

Vol. 1 – Zitten [2008]

Release Recommendation: Vol. 1 – Zitten

Zitten’s debut album is nothing short from breathtaking. Well, that is, if you like gentle songs with an acoustic feel and listen to this kind of music for other reasons than to fall asleep to. On the album you will find eleven tracks, usually with acoustic guitar or piano arrangement, and some cello added here and there.

About the Author

Kay is the English version manager, aka editor in chief/executive editor and one of JaME’s vice-presidents. Between her job, second BA studies and random language courses, she’s able to find time to shout at her darling team members and write an article or two once in a while. If that isn’t enough, she runs a JRock company in her home country and occasionally organizes concerts of well-known Japanese rock acts.    Although she got into Japanese music through visual kei, she has now moved onto different sorts of music such as pop, alternative/indie rock and will talk your ears off about anything related to reggae in Japan.
